Everyone is talking about Gut Health these days. What exactly is it and how can you improve yours? And...while we're here, what is Kombucha, anyway?
GUT HEALTH 🥦 Your gut 'microbiome’ is made up of trillions of bacteria and other microorganisms, some good and some not-so-good, that co-exist in the lower intestine. 🥦 If you have a good diversity (or balance) of organisms - your body will function optimally as the gut ‘microbiota’ aid with digestion, metabolism, immune function and brain health. 🥦 Gut imbalance (think more bad guys than good guys) can lead to inflammation, which in turn is a risk factor for physical and mental disorders. 🥦 Every gut is different – there is no one ideal. The gut microbiome is influenced at birth by delivery method and genetics, then as we grow, by medication use, diet, stress, illness, age and environment.
KEEPING YOUR GUT HEALTHY How can we keep our gut microbiota healthy, balanced and functioning optimally? 🥑 Eat a healthy whole food, nutrient dense diet – high in colourful plant foods, low in starch, with well sourced proteins and good fats. Reduce, or eliminate, processed foods especially sugary treats. Look out for hidden sugars. 🥑 Consume probiotic rich foods and fermented products - kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut and cultured yogurts. Start off slowly with small amounts and increase as tolerated. 🥑 Feed the probiotics with high fibre foods to support digestive health – onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, banana, apples. Consuming raw, rather than cooked, food provides the best benefit here. 🥑 Reduce stress – take a walk in nature, exercise, top up Vitamin D levels with daily sun exposure, schedule time for self, reduce toxins in your environment and practice gratitude.
KOMBUCHA TEA 🍏 Kombucha is a probiotic rich drink that can easily be fermented at home. 🍏All you need to get started is black tea, sugar, water, a SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast) and starter tea. 🍏The SCOBY is a living home for the bacteria and yeast which transforms the sweet tea into a tangy, fizzy kombucha through a process of fermentation. 🍏 SCOBYs and starter tea can be purchased for a few dollars or are usually passed on from other Fermenters.
